Short links and tracking pixels

Create short links that count clicks, and a 1x1 pixel that counts impressions in emails and other places a script cannot run.

A short link redirects through your Supermetry domain and counts the click. A tracking pixel is a 1x1 image that counts an impression where you cannot run JavaScript, such as an email.

  1. Open your site, then Links and pixels.

  2. Select Create link, then fill in a name and a destination. The destination must be an absolute http or https URL of at most 2048 characters, with no credentials or spaces. It cannot point back at another short link.

  3. Optionally set the slug (the last part of the URL). Leave it empty to get a random 7-character one. A slug is 2 to 64 lowercase letters, digits, hyphens or underscores. Words such as api, admin or login are reserved.

  4. Optionally add default utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term and utm_content values (up to 120 characters each), an expiry date and a click limit.

  5. Copy the short URL, which has the form https://analytics.example.com/l/your-slug. Each link can also show a QR code, drawn in your browser without a network call.

What you should see: opening the short URL redirects (HTTP 302) to the destination with your default UTM parameters appended. A parameter the destination already sets is left alone.

Open a link to see clicks per day (in the site’s time zone), countries, referrer hosts and devices. The default range is the last 30 days and the maximum is 366 days. Counts are batched, so a click can take a few seconds to appear.

Case Answer
Link works 302 to the stored destination
Unknown or disabled link 404
Expired, or click limit reached 410
Too many requests from one client 429 with Retry-After

The destination always comes from the saved link, never from the request, so the endpoint is not an open redirect. A site holds at most 500 links.

  1. In Links and pixels, open the Tracking pixel tab.

  2. Optionally enter a campaign tag of up to 64 letters, digits, ., _, : or -. An invalid tag in the URL is ignored.

  3. Copy the generated snippet. It has this form:

    <img src="https://analytics.example.com/px/YOUR_SITE_ID.gif?c=spring-newsletter" width="1" height="1" alt="" style="display:none" />

What you should see: impressions per day and per campaign appear in the pixel statistics. The endpoint always returns the same transparent GIF, so a counted or uncounted hit never shows a broken image.

Viewers and above can read links, pixel snippets and statistics. Editors and above can create, change and delete links. Changes are recorded in the audit log.

  • Counts are small daily totals. Raw IP addresses and user agents are not stored. Country, referrer host and device class are derived at request time.
  • Bots are redirected but not counted.
  • On a site that respects privacy signals, visitors sending Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control are redirected or served the pixel but not counted.
